AMX domotics home automation remote control home theatreIn a drawer in Tom and Kim Buchanan’s theatre room lies a jumble of remote controls to operate every plasma-screen TV, DVD player and VCR in the house. There are 17 clickers in there, not including the half-dozen to work the satellite television on each screen. It’s the VCR-programming nightmare magnified, every remote’s tiny buttons just waiting to frustrate the person trying to figure out what works what.

Walk into this home, though, and see how smoothly and easily a system can run when all those remotes are dumped into a forgotten drawer in the theatre room and replaced by a house-wide system of automation run from touch-screen panels. It’s almost eerie, the amount of things that can be controlled from the small screen on the wall between the Buchanans’ open kitchen and family room. Every light in the house, every speaker embedded in the ceilings, the fireplaces, televisions, security cameras and heating system — they all connect right here for users.
